Before opening their new facilities in January 2020, College Mixte Le Refuge in Lanzac, Haiti was an elementary school that provided schooling for 180 students, including 8 students from the Project House of Hope orphanage where our teams serve and where many of our Calvary family have a sponsorship relationship with children. The school met in a rented space with a landlord who could ask them to leave at any time. The government in Haiti does not provide elementary schooling - all schools are privately run and education is not an option for many children unless they are able to attend a school like Le Refuge. Less than 50 percent of all children in Haiti are able to attend an elementary school and only 40 percent of the students continue on into secondary school.

In 2018, Calvary partnered with Project Refuge to raise $150,000 for a permanent building so that Le Refuge would have a stable location that they can call their own with more space and better conditions. That goal was reached and in January 2020 the school opened its doors to students in pre-k through 12th grade!

Since then, Haiti has experienced many trials - - Covid, earthquakes, gang violence, and more. Not all students are able to pay the school fees and Le Refuge school does not turn students away if they miss a payment. Right now the school is falling short around $1000 every month. Our goal is to find sponsors to commit to $25, $50 or more per month to help make up that gap.
