Worship Team Handbook
Mission Statement
“ Our Mission is to make followers who make followers of Jesus”
At Calvary, we ask you to give time each week to three things:
1. Worship
2. Serving
3. Small Groups
Calvary’s Follower Statements
I. Followers follow Jesus
• Going to church
• Meet with our staff about baptism
• Find a small group
II. Followers share what they know
• Use Social Media
• Invite your friends and neighbors
• Tell your story
III. Followers serve God and others
• Join a serving Team (the worship team is a serving team)
• go on a mission trip (national or international)
• Servanthood Saturday (one in the fall, one in the spring)
IV. Followers give sacrificially
• The Giving ladder:
1. Give something
2. Give regularly
3. Give a percentage
4. Increase your percentage
5. Give generously
Our Staff and Leadership are guided by 5 Core Values
1. Champion Christ - Bringing glory to Jesus in all we do
2. Communicate to Completion - Finishing well and including others in
the dialogue
3. Mission over Me -Putting what is best for Calvary over our personal
preferences
4. Know the Why - Ensuring that everything we do accomplishes the
vision
5. People over Programs - Valuing relationship more than getting stuff
done
Worship Team Five C’s
Everything we do will flow from the previous statements and values
Worship Teams 5 Values (Taken from Gateway Worship)
I. Core : Our Understanding of Worship
II. Character : Our Lifestyle of Worship
III. Craft : Our gifting and skill in Worship
IV. Community : Our connection to others in Worship
V. Culture : Excellence, Kindness, Trust, Honor, Loyalty
I. Core :
Our Understanding of Worship
Who we are as worshippers.
• We always worship from the inside out, not outside in. (Psalm 108:1)
- This means that we have to worship with our hearts and minds
before we can worship with our hands, voice, and feet
• We always worship from a place of authenticity
- Worship from the stage that is not authentic is always recognized by
the congregation. (Acts 19:11-20 A bit harsh, but we understand that
the spiritual forces recognize false worship, and they attack)
II. Character: Our lifestyle of Worship
What we do when we are not on the platform
• We must worship privately in order to lead worship publicly
How do you do that?
- Regular Bible Study
- Worship by yourself (in the car, at home, on the side of a mountain,
anywhere you can be alone with the Father)
- Rehearse for the upcoming Sunday.
• We must worship in authenticity from the seats of the church just as we
do from the platform.
- We want to appear to be enjoying the presence of the Lord.
Authentic Worship will always produce authentic expression. While
we may enter a Sunday with our hearts focused on other things, we
trust that Jesus is worthy to be praised even in the midst of our
circumstance and choose to worship Him. That is authentic Worship.
• Luke 7:36-50 (Woman anoints Jesus)
• Mark 12:41-44 (Widow gives all)
• 2 Samuel 6:14 (David dances before the Lord)
• John 4 (Spirit and Truth, Woman at the well)
• Revelation 4: 8-11 (The Greatest Worship Service Ever)
• (Matthew 6:5-15) (The Lords Prayer)
- Platform Worship is not a goal to get to. It’s not a chance to
display our talents. It comes with great responsibility.
• We must live a life of integrity.
- We cannot live one way at church and another outside of church.
- Be watchful of what you post on Social Media.
- Proverbs 4:25-27, 11:3, 12:22, 21:3, Psalm 41:11-12, Philippians
4:8
III. Craft :
Our gifting and skills in Worship
• This is not the “gifts of the spirit” as written in 1 Corinthians 12. This is
your musical ability. Something that can be sharpened.
• We must always be prepared for rehearsals.
- Preview the music on PCO
- Ask questions if you’re unsure. (Communicate to completion)
- Get to rehearsals early to setup and prep.
• Rehearsals start Thursdays at 7:00pm. Please arrive early if you
need to setup.
• Rehearsals start Sundays at 7:15am. Please arrive early if you
need to setup.
• We must always strive to be better.
- Complacency will kill the team.
- We must be willing to change for the health of the church.
(Ephesians 4:1-3)
IV. Community :
Our connection to others in Worship
• How we interact with each other.
• Let us not give up meeting together. (Hebrews 10:25)
- Quarterly Worship Nights with the Worship Team
• At someones house, share a meal together
- Thursday Rehearsals
• Pray for one another. (Ephesians 5:13-16)
- Build a prayer team for the worship team.
- Text group about how we can pray for one another.
• Elevate others above yourself. (Romans 12:3-6, 9-10, 14-21)
- “Followers who make Followers” should always be looking for
those who could potentially lead as we do. Always be thinking how
you can elevate others above yourself.
(Philippians 2)
• Discipleship is key
• Creating safe spaces for people to grow in their gift and
community within the worship team.
- We must not use our gifts to elevate ourselves among others.
• Were all on the same level. (Galatians 3:28)
V. Culture :
Excellence, Trust, Loyalty, Kindness, Honor.
Our DNA , How we will be defined as Calvary Worship
• We will point to Jesus in all we say and do.
- We take credit for nothing.
- We will speak positively about everyone on the team.
• We will worship with everything we have within us.
- First service is not just another rehearsal.
- Last service is hard as well, we must focus on leading with
the same amount of energy as the first!
- We will take the steps necessary to be best prepared for
Sunday.
• We will strive to build unity among the team.
- We trust one another.
- We’re loyal to each other.
- We show kindness to each other.
- We honor each other. (place them above ourselves)
- James 4:1-12, Psalm 133
Things we will Expect from you!
I. Be on time.
• Be respectful of everyones time.
- Rehearsals :
• Thursdays at 7:00pm - 9:00pm
• (mandatory to play on Sundays. Occasionally, we will move rehearsals to another night of the week.)
• Sundays at 7:15 am - 8:30am
• Green Room Meeting at 8:30am
• Services: 9:00am , 10:20am
II. Be prepared.
• Thursday rehearsals are to fine tune the Sunday Service.
- Suggestions welcomed.
• Sunday is not the time to make changes or offer suggestions.
• Sunday is not the time to practice.
• Go to bed on time. (It is important to be well rested
III. Dress appropriately
• No cracks, top or bottom
- SHORTS OR SHORT DRESSES are not allowed on Sundays by the
Stage Worship Team.
• Exception: Drummers, only because they are in the drum shield.
• This does not include AVL team.
• Be mindful that the stage is elevated and the front rows are looking
up.
• Make sure your shirts are long enough, even with hands raised
• Dresses should be at a modest length.
- General Rule of Thumb; “Modest is Hottest” and “If I have to ask, its
probably not appropriate”
- T SHIRTS are ok to wear as long as they don't draw attention away
from worshipping God. We are not on the platform to bring attention to
ourselves. I would recommend brand names (Under Armour, Nike,
adidas, etc...) but nothing distracting. (Ex: Tie Dye Shirts (unless Amy
Anthony gives you one))
- Low cut shirts or low cut blouses are not allowed.
- Please use good personal hygiene, but avoid wearing strong perfumes
or colognes as they can cause allergic reactions.
- Please, do not make Chris have to confront you on this. He does not
like it when he has to do it.
• Singers and musicians must be comfortable on stage.
• Worship Team members should maintain a faithful attendance record
when not on the platform.
- We don't actually keep attendance, but we do try our best to notice if
anyone has been out for several weeks in a row.
- Worship team members are encouraged to sit in the main auditorium
for at least one sermon on the Sunday's they are scheduled to play.
• All Worship Team Members are encouraged to adhere to the Calvary
Partnership Covenant (p 16 of Discovering Calvary Handbook)
- We want you to prayerfully consider becoming members at Calvary.
While it is currently not a requirement to be on the Worship Team, it
is of value to commit to the life of the Church and strive for unity!
